Research on Integration of Internet/WWW and Wireless Communication Architectures

‘@

Because of the rapid progress of the computer hardware and wireless communication techniques, mobile computing has become a hot research field. Under this computing environment, users can connect to the WWW through the portable devices, and get any information at any time, and any place. However, the information faced by users becomes more and more various as to the rich development of the internet. Users have to waste a lot of time on searching or browsing information. These complex and time-consuming operations have to be limited much more for the inherit constraints of the wireless communication devices on the computing power, network bandwidth and battery power.

This project regards the WWW, which grows amazingly, as the main information source, considers the related techniques for search, browsing, and display of information under the wireless communication architecture, and expects to promote the overall performance of the integrated framework. In addition, we will also design a prototype system for an integrated application to provide performance evaluation, and a basis for the improvement in the future. The project will undertake in the following three steps:

1.Information display

The user devices under the wireless communication environment are usually in lack of the storage and computing powers. Therefore, how to migrate these capabilities on client side to a well-functional workstation is the first issue and needs a solution while establishing an application system under the wireless environment. We will propose some feasible ways to display information and the corresponding interface designs according to the characteristics of the web pages, and in the mean time, analyze their goodness and weakness. The goal of this part is to reduce the usage of wireless network bandwidth, and alleviate the requirements for the computing and storage power of user devices as much as possible.

2.information browsing

The capability of data caching is common to the WWW servers. We can predict the targets or directions of user browsing in the future by analyzing the user behaviors in the browsing history. We can use data mining techniques to get such information, which can be regarded a major support for the browsing prediction, and obtain a prediction very close to the user behaviors with the aids of other possible factors. Furthermore, we will also propose a web-page prefetching scheme, and actually evaluate the precision degree of prediction and the efficiency of prefetching. The goal of these mechanisms is to save the slow and always jammed transfer time at the expense of huge and low-cost storage space on the server. In addition to reducing the network flow, it also saves the waiting time of users underground and gains the power-saving benefit.

3.information search

To overcome all the constraints within the wireless communication environment and break through the difficulty of searching information on the WWW, users in the same local area can share their own information by the document cache of proxy server, which is the right application design to adapt such an architecture. We will construct the information filtering mechanism to let users get what they need without spending too much time on browsing under wireless environment. The goal of this part is to avoid unnecessary browsing operations and then reduce the network flow. The user can also save the power without waiting for the search results.
